The Eighth House, distinguished as the House of Closeness or Intimacy, governs matters involving sex and other intimate activities that form part of the human zeitgeist. In the grand scheme of things, the fundamental purpose of this House is that of renewal: every relationship that we form and fortify as a result of our closeness to one another is a new beginning, and perhaps the development of the permanent end of something else entirely.
As such, even though we are wounded endlessly by the many adversities that keep us awake at night, we are nonetheless gifted with a restorative nature, aided no doubt by the closeness that we eventually end up forging with others. It may not necessarily be sex, but we may develop intimacy with our friends, for example, as we wade through darker times and overcome the harsh challenge of keeping oneself together in really stressful situations. Intimacy, in this regard, fortifies our belief both in ourselves and others, especially in moments where the same belief is brought into question.
Now, human beings have various ways of displaying intimacy. Some do it through the pleasurable act that is sex, while others still do so by passing on material possessions and actually giving others control of their own holdings and territories. This entrustment of property is therefore a natural extension of the Eighth House, being that these properties are an expression of one’s love for other people. Whether it is something as official as a will or unofficial as a dying wish on one’s deathbed, it doesn’t matter; this House covers ultimately any intimate gesture from one person to another.
Lastly, it also covers to some extent the moral aspects of intimacy and its limits. How far should one go to express one’s desire for closeness? When does intimacy become a tool for manipulation? What can you do to actually make sure that you are not harassing others as you desire to take the relationship to the next level?
